For Grace Mwangi, the arrival of her first child came with a bundle of blessings; as two months later she won 18,000 Kenya shillings, following the culmination of the jikokoa- Kameme FM Promotion.
Ms. Mwangi, a stay at home mum could not hide her joy as she received the prize money and a jikokoa during the finale of the promotion held at the Kenya Livestock and Producers Association (KLPA) event in Karatina, Nyeri.
Her text message was randomly selected out of the over 100,000 Short Media Messages (SMS) sent in by the over 3.5 million Kameme FM listeners from the 47 counties in Kenya.
“I bought new household furnishings and baby clothes with the prize money,” said Ms. Mwangi.
The promotion called on Kameme FM listeners to SMS the name ‘JIKOKOA’ once a day for a chance to win a jikokoa and the grand prize of 18,000 Ksh.
The promotion received between 2000 – 5000 SMS’ in a day, said Jeff Pilisuk who was in charge of handling the radio promotion for BURN.
We set the amount at 18,000 Ksh since this is what you save in a year when you use the jikokoa and one deserving winner; in this case Ms. Mwangi got the whole amount in a day, explained Pilisuk.
“Juggling between taking care of a young child and running a home can be a daunting task for any new mum; but with the jikokoa, I am able to cut the time I spend cooking, as the stoves cooks very fast allowing me more time for other house duties as well as time with my child,” said Ms. Mwangi of her jikokoa experience.
Ms. Mwangi believes the jikokoa to be a life saving stove, with its reduced smoke and lighting capacities and is already talking to her neighbours on why the need to buy a jikokoa.
