At present, our carbon credits are issued through Gold Standard, which means emission reductions are verified by independent, third-party auditors and by SustainCertWe use methodologies based on the best-available evidence. In addition, BURN is actively engaging in the ongoing process, led by the Clean Cookstove Alliance, UNFCCC and Gold Standard, to update cookstove methodologies. We hope this partnership will create a more level playing field for all cookstove players

We believe that carbon project integrity starts with an excellent product. Families notice the difference when they cook with a BURN stove: less smoke, less time spent cooking, and meaningful fuel savingsThis is because we design stoves that are extremely usable, highly efficient, and durable. Every BURN product starts with understanding local cooking dynamics. We listen to families, adapting our stoves to their needs in an iterative design process
Our stoves are made in a modern manufacturing plant and offer notably better performance than most improved biomass stoves. Our latest Jikokoa boasts an industry-leading 72% thermal efficiency, while the ECOA Wood achieves 51%, consuming ~70% less wood than traditional fires

BURN is the only cookstove project developer that covers the full carbon value chain from beginning to end in Africa. We do it all: from product design and project creation to manufacturing, distribution, after-sales service, and carbon issuance. This unique vantage point means we are well positioned to deliver high-integrity projectsUnlike other companies that outsource product design and production, our stoves are proudly made by BURN in Africa. We have two factories in Ruiru, Nairobi, and are expanding to facilities in West Africa

Before we launch in any market, we conduct detailed feasibility studies and willingness to pay assessments to ensure our projects will be additional. This testing helps us understand common cooking fuels, the type of stoves families use, the barriers to adopting better technologies, and how much families can afford. BURN then designs carbon projects to get our excellent stoves to low-income families at a subsidised cost
In our latest carbon projects, our field agents visit families in advance of each sale to validate that they meet our target criteria. By pre-screening customers, we can ensure that our carbon project monitoring is high integrity. This is because we know that our “baseline” sample survey matches the profile of the families who use our stoves in-project, making our monitoring results comparableAll BURN stoves have a unique serial number to enable tracking and ensure no double counting. In every market, we conduct ongoing user awareness campaigns to educate families on the benefits of improved cookstoves and show people how to use them

We do robust in-household monitoring for every project

BURN believes integrity comes from ground-truthed data, so we conduct four-day in-household Kitchen Performance Tests (KPTs) for all of our most recent projects. Rather than leverage default values, our KPTs account for real-world fuel consumption, including stove stacking and any rebound effect, before and after stoves are distributedWe triangulate the adoption and usage rates from our KPT sample with telephone surveys and in-person household visits, and then all our ground-proofed data is validated by independent auditors

An independent randomised control trial has validated our impact – families cut weekly fuel expenses by $2, with fuel savings of 39% sustained beyond a yearBURN is actively engaging with industry conversations around digital monitoring. For our electric products, we’ve developed proprietary technology to monitor live usage. This will bring greater certainty and rigour to our new electric cookstove carbon projects. In addition, we are piloting digital monitoring solutions for biomass stoves

Our sampling procedures are based on social science best practice and Gold Standard’s methodologies. Sample size is determined by confidence interval and the standard deviation found in the results.
These 2019 results validated BURN's internal ex-ante engineering estimates for fuel efficiency savings, showing they were accurate in the field with a 95% confidence interval. Note that we estimate our latest stove models reduce fuel consumption by up to 60%.
